The Power of Education in Tech Careers: Why I Keep Going Back to Learn

Bharath Kumar K CBharath Kumar K C · Updated · 4 min read

Tech rewards hands-on skills, but it's easy to underestimate formal education. Whether you're starting out or a seasoned professional, structured learning can push your career further than experience alone. I've seen it in my own path: an M.Sc in Computer Science (2012), an M.Tech in Software Security from BITS Pilani while working (2021), and most recently IISc Bangalore's Generative AI programme, completed with an A+.

Education is the map

Starting a tech career without fundamentals is like travelling without a map. Algorithms, data structures, networking and security are the building blocks that let you reason about real systems — including the ones a product manager has to make trade-offs about with engineering.

It sharpens how you think

Good education trains critical thinking, structured reasoning and problem-solving. Those skills transfer straight into product work: framing the right problem, weighing options and explaining decisions clearly to stakeholders.

Learning never stops in tech

Technology keeps moving, so learning can't end with a degree. Certifications, focused courses and advanced degrees keep you current and open new paths. For me, going deep on Generative AI wasn't about a credential — it was about being able to judge what LLMs can and can't do before putting them in front of customers.

From problem solver to innovator

A solid grasp of concepts lets you question assumptions instead of copying patterns. The people leading today's AI breakthroughs pair practical skill with a deep understanding of mathematics and machine learning — and that same depth helps product leaders spot opportunities others miss.

Beyond the code: collaboration

Group projects, cohorts and hackathons build communication and teamwork — the skills that matter most when products are built by cross-functional teams.

In the ever-changing world of tech, education is your secret weapon. Treat it as an ongoing commitment, not a box you tick once.
